I opened my eyes to total whiteness. I blinked a few times to clear the haziness in my mind, but soon found it was not in my mind, but surrounding me. There was no pain—no blinding headaches, no white-hot sharpness in my stomach, no creeping blackness inside. There was only whiteness and light. And silence. The silence was a welcome respite after the raging sounds of war. I squeezed my eyes closed again, and a few tears escaped. I killed so many, but maybe my death wish was successful? I would never know.
